Šindra – autentična kafana na Zelenom vencu, Beograd
The Story of a Real Belgrade Kafana
Authentic Kafana in Belgrade Center | Cheap Drinks & Local Atmosphere
For over twenty years, we’ve held our ground at Zeleni Venac, right in the center of Belgrade. The fact that we’ve been here since 1998 says enough — surviving this long in this city takes a certain kind of stubbornness.
We made it through the end of the wild ’90s, the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, and everything that followed. We even survived the fire in 2020. And we’re still here — still resisting, still pouring drinks.
Because a real kafana — a true Serbian bar — isn’t just a place to drink. It’s where people come to kill time, celebrate, or sit in silence. The loud come to sing, the quiet come to think, and everyone finds their place.
Belgrade is a big city. Every year, new bars open and close. The reason we’re still here might be simple: the owner. He may seem grumpy — in reality, he’s even worse. He doesn’t tolerate nonsense, trends, or “modern improvements.”
He built Šindra himself — tile by tile, board by board. And he has no interest in introducing things like Wi-Fi, QR codes, or reservations. You come, you drink, you don’t cause trouble, you pay, and you move on.
Everything a person needs in a kafana can be found in a glass, a mug, a shot, or across the table in conversation. Everyone is welcome — as long as they behave and respect the place.
The interior is authentic and rustic. That means wood, not plastic. No over-polishing, no fake decoration. Even the large tree stump chained in front of the entrance — for “security reasons” — tells you enough about the neighborhood and the character of this place.
And maybe because of all this — or in spite of it — in a city full of espresso macchiatos, fake traditions, and overpriced small beers, we’ve remained one of the last true kafana oases in Belgrade.
A place where the bohemian spirit still lives. Where you don’t make reservations. Where you come unannounced — and stay longer than you planned.

A Message for Emir Kusturica and Quentin Tarantino:
Dear guests, if you’re local, you’re probably already familiar with the character — and (mis)deeds — of this man. Since he has generously granted us the rights to use him as inspiration, we’d like to let Emir know: if he ever decides to film Underground 2, he can get in touch with him at our bar.
As for Quentin, only a remake of Pulp Fiction is acceptable — and only if he plays Butch.
